Earn your wings.
In New Zealand we each have the right to be safe from crime. And we have laws to protect us and police to ensure that those laws are observed. It is unnecessary for any New Zealander to take the law into his or her own hands. However, if there’s trouble at your place and you need help, who is going to get there faster: the Emergency Services, or your next door neighbor?
In New Zealand there are 4.1 million people and only 11,000 police staff nationwide. That’s only one for every 373 of us. Police respond to 600,000 emergency 111 calls every year. While our police do an excellent job generally, it’s obvious that they cannot be everywhere at once.
Everybody has the right and the responsibility to look after themselves and their property, within the confines of New Zealand law. Nobody can look after your neighborhood better than you and your neighbors can. Not a hired security firm, not even the police. It’s your neighborhood. So take care of it.
The Guardian Angels have been helping neighbors take care of neighborhoods for over thirty years, in countries around the world. Our unarmed street patrols provide one of the best deterrents to crime available: watchful alert citizens who will not hesitate to get involved and who are unafraid of criminal activity. More than a neighborhood watch group, the Guardian Angels deter crime by confronting it at its source.
Guardian Angels train in first aid, CPR, self defense and the law, and we patrol the streets in teams of six, unarmed and on foot, helping to keep our fellow citizens safe. We move loiterers along. We assemble as a visible deterrent to would-be trouble-makers. And if we see a crime in progress we will call the police and, if appropriate, hold the perpetrator under Citizen’s Arrest.
It’s hands-on crime deterrence, and anybody can learn how to do it.
That’s where you come it. The Guardian Angels are looking for Volunteers around New Zealand. Ordinary folks from all walks of life. We do not discriminate on any basis: if you are over 18 years of age and concerned about public safety we would like to hear from you.
As a Guardian Angels patrol volunteer you will learn valuable life skills: first aid, CPR, self-defense, and teamwork. You will earn self-confidence, self-awareness and self-control. And, over time, you will be involved in situations that test your mettle and prove your worth as a human being: deeply personally rewarding experiences. Helping people will become addictive. Your life will develop a whole new dimension and purpose.
All training is provided for free. It is hard work, and it requires dedication. But if you are up to it, we are willing to help you get there.
Interested? Well, nothing will happen until you decide to make it happen. The next move is yours...
